Malbank School & Sixth Form College, Head of Science, (MPS/UPS) plus TLR 1b (£9,928), Full-time Permanent post from September 2020. We are looking to appoint an outstanding Head of Science to lead our team of excellent science staff. The successful candidate will be an outstanding classroom practitioner with a track record of facilitating students effectively to ensure that they make excellent progress.They should have some experience of impact driven leadership in a previous role.
This Head of Science post is of huge significance for the school. We are looking for a candidate who is, An outstanding and inspirational teacher with high expectations of students and themselves, An outstanding leader and manager who can nurture the team as well as holding them accountable, Able to prove they have a successful track record of securing good outcomes for students, Able to teach science to KS3 a specialism to GCSE. The ability to teach A level is desirable but not essential, Willing to generously give their time outside of lessons to students and colleagues, Actively supportive of the learning culture and values of the school, Skilled in inspiring staff and pupils,Committed to their professional development and Resilient, has presence, boundless energy and a good sense of humour.
The school has a track record of nurturing the professional development of staff. The successful candidate will therefore be exposed to decision making on whole school matters. They will also be a key member of The Senior Raising Standards Team. This will provide excellent professional development experiences to facilitate progression to an Assistant Head post in the future.
The Science Department is housed in its own block of eleven well-equipped laboratories with associated preparation and staff work areas. We also have a discrete ICT facility within the department. Staffing currently stands at five full-time posts and six part time posts. Many of our science teachers contribute to the teaching of A-level. The teaching of Science is enhanced by the excellent support of three technicians. In Key Stage 3, the Science Department uses its own scheme of work and resources. In Year 7, classes are taught in mixed ability form groups. In year 8 onwards, science is taught in ability groups. In Key Stage 4 our students have the options of studying AQA Trilogy at Foundation or Higher level, or separate Sciences which is part of our Options provision. Each group has its own assigned tutor who reports regarding pupil data for the group.
At A-level, the Sciences are both popular and successful. We offer courses in Biology, Chemistry and Physics (AQA). The number of groups in the sixth form varies from year to year. Groups are usually shared by staff. Recent results have shown some improvement on previous years but we are keen to develop further our strategies for raising attainment across the ability range and the successful candidate will be able to drive this improvement to the next level.
